Shawn Corey Carter was born in Brooklyn Borough in New York City on December 4,1969.
He was raised in Marcy Houses, a housing project in Brooklyn's Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood.
Gloria Carter (Shawn's mother) raised him and his 3 siblings after their father (Adnis Reeves) abandoned them.
He attended Eli Whitney High school Brooklyn until it was closed.
He then attended the nearby George Westinghouse career and Technical Education high school with future rappers like The Notorious B.I.G & Busta Rhymes. He did not graduate from high school.

Having no major record label in 1995, he sold CD's from his car trunk and with help of his friends Damon "Dame Dash & Kareem "Biggs" Burke they created Rock-A-Fella record label which went defunct in 2013.With the aid of Rock-A-Fella record label. Jay-Z released his 1996 debut album "Reasonable doubt" which reached number 23 on Billboard 200 and sold 1.6 million copies on the first year.
He went further to release 12 more albums which gained wide success.
